Vista Del Mar Union School District was established in 1926, bringing together three one-room schoolhouses: Orella School, Las Cruces School, and Alcatraz School. The district serves students from El Capitan to Hollister Ranch and from Las Cruces to Point Concepcion.

The district's flagship school, Vista de Las Cruces School, is located in the Gaviota State Park. The school serves students from Transitional Kindergarten to Grade 8, in a stunning mission-style building which was sponsored by Chevron in 1992 and relocated.

Generations of families from the coast have been attending Vista de Las Cruces School. The school district is proud of its family-oriented culture and tradition of putting students first. The small class sizes, personalized learning plans, and emphasis on student achievement, active participation, and care for each child, help create an environment where students support and care for one another.
